Part A Choose one of the five areas of Reading (Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Comprehension, Fluency) from the Instructional Considerations for ELLs in the Five Areas of Reading and summarize the considerations that teachers must make for English language learners in this area. Part B Locate your grade appropriate Sunshine State Standards for Language Arts (on the Multicultural & ESOL website www.broward.k12.fl.us/esol/ -under Best Practices) and choose one standard (this can be any standard that will allow you to incorporate listening, speaking, reading, and writing practice). Then think about assignments/activities that help students to master this standard. You may use activities/strategies suggested in the text, Instructional Considerations for ELLs in the Five Areas of Reading, and/or the Instructional Strategies Matrix www.broward.k12.fl.us/esol/. Provide an overview (this does not need to be a full lesson plan) of how you would deliver a lesson(s) for this standard that would incorporate the four modalities of language. Explain how you would differentiate instruction to meet the language needs for students at each level of English language proficiency (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced). Part C Considering the many topics we have covered in this course (first and new language development, the history of English, phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax, four modalities of language, etc.), explain what is currently working effectively in your class to develop your students’ language skills. Explain some areas that are potential opportunities for more effective instruction. A) Read pages 84-101 of The Crosscultural, Language, and Academic Development Handbook and respond to the following questions: Explain how an English language learner’s literacy skills in his or her L1 (first language) might affect his or her development of literacy skills in a new language? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ What are some considerations a teacher needs to make in order to effectively address error correction and grammar in oracy and literacy instruction? _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Explain the seven instructional procedures highlighted in the text that have proved successful in leading students to literacy in their second language. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ According to the textbook, what is the role of phonics in literacy instruction for English language learners? _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Summarize how prereading, Language Experience Approach (LEA) and Directed Reading-Thinking Activity (DR-TA) can help ELLs develop literacy skills. B) Read a section of your choice from the Instructional Considerations for ELLs in the Five Areas of Reading (example: Fluency). Reflective Journal Entry: Share an activity that teachers can use to promote the language development of ELLs in one or more of the five areas of Reading.
